For Immediate Release
Friday, January 11, 2008: January 13th is National Amber Alert Awareness Day as well as the perfect time to announce a special contest for 5th graders. As the administrator of the Houston Regional Amber Alert, Texas Center for the Missing is coordinating the State of Texas National Missing Child Day Poster Contest. This contest, open to all 5th graders in the State of Texas, is a perfect springboard for discussing child safety in a productive and non-threatening way. Educators and parents are encouraged to use this artistic endeavor as a way to get children involved in contemplating their classmates’, and their own, safety. Unfortunately, few children have missed the highly publicized tragedies of child abduction cases during the last few years. The Poster Contest is a perfect way to educate and communicate with children about this complicated and potentially scary topic.
We encourage all schools to get involved in the National Missing Child Day Poster Contest. The theme for the poster should be “Bring Our Missing Children Home.” Rules and deadlines are posted at www.tcftm.org. The winning Texas poster will be forwarded to the national committee which will select one winner from the United States. The single national winner, his/her teacher, and his/her parents will participate in the National Missing Children's Day ceremony at the U.S. Department of Justice to be held on or around May 25, 2008 (transportation and lodging will be provided). The national winner also will receive a national award certificate and a United States Savings Bond. Additionally, the 2008 winning poster at the national level will be utilized in the 2009 Missing Child Day campaign and promotions.
